Remarkable for its innovative composition, with the semicircle of mounted Roman soldiers, the authorship of this painting remains a puzzle. It has been ascribed to Giovanni Toscani, a follower of Masaccio and Masolino, and most recently to the very young Fra Angelico. Of key importance is the influence on the work of the sculptor Ghiberti, who was then working on the Florentine baptistery doors.
