Having fled Bethlehem, the Holy Family rests beneath a date palm tree. In a beautifully orchestrated dialogue of gesture and glance, Mary and Joseph look on as John the Baptist greets Jesus. The golden light rising over the city and the delicate handling of the small figures of the Holy Family, shown again escaping through the mountains, illustrate this High Renaissance artist's ability to humanize the divine and sanctify the natural.
