 | Description | |
This elderly man is identified as a Venetian senator on account of his dress. The dark background, the paper with the artist's signature, and the parapet separating the subject from the viewer are all features of paintings by Antonello da Messina, who had transformed Venetian portraiture. Bonsignori was born in Verona, and the linearity of the picture is more characteristic of Veronese painting.
