Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the three Maries who attended her at Calvary, mourn at the foot of Christ's cross. The sky darkens as a mounted centurian approaches, lance in hand. Delacroix was a leading painter of religious scenes and often depicted the Crucifixion.
One version showing Christ between the two thieves was exhibited at the Salon of 1835.
