 | Description | |
This nocturnal depiction of the Three Kings honoring the new-born Jesus reveals the flickering brushwork for which Dosso is noted. The huge moon with a pink aureole is traversed by inky clouds. It casts a mysterious light, picking out features of the fortified town in the background.
Probably painted in the late 1520s, perhaps in Ferrara, where the artist worked for the court of the ruling Este family.
