 | Description | |
The main entrance into the Amber Fort, Suraj Pol ("Sun Gate"), is named so because it faces east where the sun rises. A winding uphill ramp leads to the gate that was reserved for the royal family and their important visitors. Nowadays most visitors hop onto the back of an elephant for a ride up the ramp to reach the gate. For those with private cars, though, they must either stop at the bottom and ride the elephant or drive around to the other side of the fort and enter through Chand Pol ("Moon Gate"). Suraj Pol leads into the first and largest courtyard in the palace, Jaleb Chowk.
