In 1821 the "Schauspielhaus" (Theatre House) was built following the designs of Schinkel, and at the end of the 19th Century, in the course of the development of Freiderichstrasse, the Gendarmenmarkt became a business and administrative centre. Since 1991 the square has been rebuilt following historical models, and its present appearance is shaped by residential and administrative buildings housing both shops and restaurants. |
